Beloved: Grace and Peace
Elkmont Baptist Church
Dearest and Beloved
Old vs. New
Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I am prone to tell my children how to behave and what to be, but I do not always tell them how. Today I remedy that.
Grace to you.
The Apostle Paul teaches us in Romans 6:6 (bold added): "Knowing this, that our
is crucified with
, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we
should not serve sin." He tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:17 (bold added): "Therefore if any
a new creature:
things are passed away; behold, all things
are become new."
We are to know, first of all, that we have become new creatures in Christ; that the old man that we were was crucified with Him. Think on that. That is the first step.
Paul tells us, "That ye put off concerning the former conversation the
corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the
, which after God is created in righteousness and true
holiness" (Ephesians 4:22-24; bold added). The flesh, the enemy, the world will try to manifest in us the old man (our old behaviors, conduct, manner, deportment) through selfish desires (lusts). The old man is corrupt (dead and stinks). In order to put away those old behaviors, we must replace them with new behaviors. This is accomplished by renewing our minds after the Spirit.
In the parallel passage in Colossians, Paul tells us, "Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the
with his deeds; And have put on the
renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:" (Colossians 3:9-10; bold added).
We must identify the character flaws to put off and the corresponding character qualities to put on. We find the Scripture which speaks to these and hide the Word in our hearts, so it is ready to use when the flesh, enemy, or world tries to cause that old behavior to rear up. The Word of God is living and breathing and sharper than any two-edged sword.
