The Seriousness of Rebellion
Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I wish to discuss a subject which is hard. Because many of us are Southerners, we don't have a biblical understanding of what being a rebel means. And no, I am not discussing Confederate soldiers (some of which were my ancestors). The Scripture speaks of rebellion as evil.

If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and
, when they have chastened him, will not
harken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son
stubborn and rebellious, he will not
obey our voice;
a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall
stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

Why is it evil? Samuel told King Saul, "For rebellion
the sin of witchcraft, and
iniquity and idolatry. Because thou has rejected the word of the
LORD, he hath also rejected thee from
king" (1 Samuel 15:23). Rebellion is the
same as witchcraft. Stubbornness is not a virtue.
Isaiah records, "Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:" (Isaiah 30:1).
What kind of woe is promised to the rebellious? Psalm 68:6 tells us, "God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry
One of our sons was acting up one day. We showed him the passage in Deuteronomy and then sent him upstairs. A little later he came down different, telling us he had been reading in Proverbs, and it was really speaking to him.
