Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Happy Father's Day! Happy Father's Day!
Grace to you.
What is a father? In today's culture, and by the culture's standard, not much. Have you noticed in Disney's movies how often the father is lazy or stupid? Have you noticed the same thing in the comedies of today?
What is a father according to God's Word? What saith the Scriptures? "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up" (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). So a father is one who has God's Word in his heart and one who teaches children diligently at every opportunity.
Speaking of Elijah: "And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse" (Malachi 4:6). Fathers are they who love the children and by loving the children stand in the gap before the Lord and the land.
A father is one who loves his wife enough to be an ogre to children for her sake. "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it;" (Ephesians 5:25). "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4).
A father is one who gives his children not everything they want, but all that they need. "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
Most of all, a father is a man who keeps his word, who finishes the race, who is faithful, who will stand no matter what. A father has the supreme privilege of representing God the Father to children everywhere.
Gentlemen, what a privilege we have. From the outside, there is no glory in doing what is right. But when it is weighed in the balance, what glory we have.
